Kyiv fortress. Kosyy kaponir, is located on Hospitalna 24 street, on the territory of the military hospital.
Slanted caponir was built in 1844 as a defense structure of the Hospital Fortification in the system of the New Pechersk Fortress.
Slanted caponir is a semi-underground structure with thick walls made of bricks and stones. The walls have embrasures and loopholes for firing guns and rifles. The ground part of Slanted Caponir overlooked the slopes of Cherepanova Mountain. For the convenience of conducting artillery flanking fire, the Oblique caponir is located at an angle to the earthen rampart of the fortress and therefore received the name “Oblique”. The oblique caponir was originally used to store weapons and artillery supplies. In the early 60s of the 19th century, the caponir was turned into a political prison.

The Kyiv Fortress includes Kyiv – Pechersk Lavra, the territory of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine in the Second World War, Arsenal Plant and many other objects, located mainly in Pechersk.
The building of the military hospital, the Hospital of the Ministry of Internal Affairs operates to this day.
The entrance to the Kosoy caponir museum, the museum is located underground, it is presented already converted for prisoners, but originally there were rooms for soldiers and guns, loopholes for rifles and guns everywhere, later, of course, cells were made and instead of loopholes there were windows that were covered with bars. The cells were in the dark and the guards did not even enter, there was a hole through which they fed and took the powder. The room itself was equipped with sunbeds with straw, the officers’ cells were equipped with iron beds. The bed was given out only for the night, taken away during the day. There are furnaces between the chambers, but the temperature did not exceed 14 degrees. State criminals were executed near the walls. Three executioners killed more than 200 people in 11 years.
I really liked the museum itself, a lot of ancient utensils, weapons, uniforms, personal belongings.
The fortress was impregnable, multi-level defense, which did not give even the slightest chance of taking the fortress. So, the next part of the defense, the horseshoe-shaped caponier comes the next part of the defense. There was a moat all around. it was possible to enter through a hanging gate.
Even if they broke through the defense, they still came under a barrage of fire from another fortification, which is why it was not possible to conquer it. Entrance to another museum, 2 of them are open in total, this one was opened only 2 years ago. Also a very interesting museum, with many uniforms. different times and history, a lot of scientific and interesting material. It’s a pity that you can’t take pictures inside the museum ((
Quite recently, an underground passage (pattern) was excavated, a fragment of it was restored, it is also interesting and you can imagine how it actually functioned.
Another view, with a rampart, in Kiev the only place in Europe where there were were restored to the full size of the embankment and were a complex system of earthen ramparts 10–15 meters high and deep ditches. The ramparts cut through patterns up to 40 meters long tunnels lined with bricks and closed on both sides by bars. Several thousand soldiers could be accommodated in the barracks.
