Back in the days of Kievan Rus, there was a market place at this place – right next to the Lviv (Jewish) Gate of ancient Kyiv, built at the same time as other fortifications of the city of Yaroslavl around 1037.

Horses and hay were traded here, hence the name of the market. The construction of the market began in 1949, and in 1958 the original pavilion was erected, which was named “Central Indoor Market” (architects: F. N. Fridlin and B. Ya. Kucher). Hall with an area of 9,000 square meters. m. was designed for 1,200 shopping places.

In May 2005, the market was closed under the pretext of its reconstruction, and in 2006 it was criminally demolished. In the photos (September 2012), only the ruins of the building, the reconstruction of which has not yet begun, can be seen at the market place.
